Nazi phrase on the streets of London

Lugenpresse Brexit

Today the so-called ‘Brexit Betrayal’ march is taking place in London. The FT’s Sebastian Payne followed the protest. He found some deeply disturbing, but perhaps unsurprising, things going on at the far-right rally.

There were references to Lady Haw Haw and someone had even brought their own gallows, which is nice. Then there was this – a sign with the word Lugenpresse emblazoned on it.

I write about this phrase in my forthcoming book.  It is a term deployed by the Nazis, meaning lying press. It was used to diminish and discredit the media. Alt-right supporters of US President Donald Trump adopted the phrase.

It has now made its way across the Atlantic.
